St. Barnabas' Church (Anglican) Award Winning Design

Ukwatte, Avisawella.

St. Barnabas' church was rebuilt twice after being burnt down during the 80’s civil unrest and was latterly severely affected by termites resulting in dire need of reconstruction. Original elements such as arches, timber lattice, glass cross & characteristic brick moulding were reproduced with modern interpretation, shrouded in a palette of grey, white & black highlights. Light plays an eminent role, imparting a sense of purity, extracted through the skylight altar tower and latticed cement grills. The new St. Barnabas’ Church with its glistening glass cross beckons to the passers-by, symbolizing resilience & faith and unobtrusively makes its presence upon the hill known.
